sore throat

i hope somebody can answer my question. i have stopped smoking for a few months now, ive smoked since i was 16. well now im coughing alot and spitting up phlegm. well my question is im coughing alot and this morning when i woke up i drank water and it felt like there was somethng in my throat. it feeels like theres a golf ball in mythroat. im thinking its inflammed or irrated because of my coughing. is this normal to feel like that?
