morning stomach upset after H Pylori treatment; on Prevacid

by windycity2007, Jun 28, 2007 11:36AM
For several weeks this spring I had recurring nausea and occasional stomach pains. I was diagnosed with H. pylori infection by breath test, and did the 14-day triple therapy (clarithromycin, amoxicillin, and Prevacid [lansoprazole]) without any problem. (I tolerated everything fine.) I felt much better. Some symptoms came back after a week or so, mostly in milder form, and not every day as before the treatment. I waited another week so I could re-test for H. pylori; the second test came back negative. I started taking Prevacid, 30 mg. once a day in the evening, and now, a week later, I'm feeling a bit worse than I did while on the triple therapy. The main symptom is morning stomach discomfort. Shortly after waking up, I'll have a "normal" BM, but within an hour or so I'll have another, looser and more acidic-feeling one (not as loose as diarrhea), followed by a morning of feeling generally icky around the stomach. (I always wonder if I'll have to bolt for the bathroom, although that hasn't happened yet.) Taking Mylanta in the AM doesn't seem to help. Is this a side-effect of the Prevacid? Should I talk to my doctor about taking it twice a day, or switching to another PPI, or going off of it entirely? Is this just part of the ulcer-healing process, or something else entirely? Thanks to anyone with ideas or help.

I should have added that I almost always feel completely fine by the evening, and often by the early afternoon. It's a morning-only situation.
