My sister was diagnoised as manic depressive about 5 years ago. She tried to kill herself.(She is 50 years old). She has been getting ect treatments twice a month for 5 years. My questions is how long are these treaments suppose to go on? Everything I have read says only 5-6 treatments then stop. She panics when my parents ask that they try to stop them.It like she is addicted. My parents take care of her which is getting very hard since they are in their 70's. She has very little if no long term memory and does nothing for herself except dress and eat. They are thinking about putting her in a nursing home. Her doctor will not stop the treatments. HELP.

this is just a comment i have worked in the hospitals and seen what many shock treatments acan do loss of memory some do not help and if she has had them that long they are not going to help yuears ago when they had so many they were called burnouts i am surprised she can think. i hate to give you negative thoughts but ask another Doctor just what happens when you have so many i have never heard of one having them that long i would suggest talking and maybe changin doctors butit sounds like your sister is to sick to hepl herself and someone is going to have to see if they cant help  i myself have never beleived in shocking the brain to many things can happen this is just an opion based on what i have seen in the mental hosps i have worked in not all doctors will do these     i do wish you lots of luck  wish there was something i could do  plese keep us posted           jo
