dehydration and ketones in children

by kat37, Jan 09, 2008 08:53PM
I have a 6 YO daughter who does not drink a lot. Its a huge issue to get her to drink 3 or 6  oz drinks a day. She has been complaining of urinary incontinence and lower abdominial pain. So, I  had a urinalysis done. It came back with no indication of infection but was showing the specific gravity was a little high and presence of ketones. My doctor is not concerned, just thinks this is because she may be a little dehydrated. And suggests we repeat the urinalysis in 6 weeks. I am just concerned, and wanted another opinion.

yes ofcourse repeat in 6 weeks and probably 6 weeks after that if this is a problem. but probably is most likey from being dehydrated which you need to address, which im sure you are.....the only thing my 4 year old will drink is garoraide!! thats it and water at night and only red gatoriade and starting at 2 he just stoped drinking and I couldnt find anything he would drink. finally I got sick with my galbladder and couldnt keep anything down and lived on gatoraide (red) he started drinking it then and has never stoped I even offered him a sprite the other day and he wanted his RED gatoriade he wont even try another color....so you have to find something she likes and she will drink it take take her to the grocery store if you already havnt and tell her to pick out whatever she will try. gatoraide strawberry milk, bolthouse juices (in the produce section next to salad at grocery store) taste awesome! different kind of juices juices mixed with sprite or ginerale, cherly temples, tang, koolaid flavored waters are really good caffiene free teas snapple makes some good ones but I would let her try lots of things and find something that she is willing to drink daily 3 to 6 ozs in not enough especially for an active 6 year old!
