Factor V

by tam066356, Jan 11, 2008 02:41PM
I was recently diagnosed with Pulmonary Emboli. I found out 2 years ago that I have Factor V leiden. My question is How can I have this when neither of my parents have it? I received a bone transplant 3 years ago. could this be linked with Factor V?

Since it's a genetic disorder your parents have to at least be carriers.  We have 2 copies of each gene (1 from mom and 1 from dad) and it all depends on how many copies of the mutated gene you have.  For instance, if you have 2 mutated copies (you're homozygous for Factor V Leiden) then both your mom and dad have to have at least one copy of that mutated gene each.  If you only have 1 copy of the mutated gene (you're heterozygous for Factor V Leiden) then you could have gotten it from your mom or your dad.
