numb hands

by ArmyPilot, Jan 11, 2008 07:07PM
I'm a 38 year old male helicopter pilot for the US Army.
I was in a car accident about 23 years ago where I suffered what I thought at the time was a minor neck injury. I did not see a doctor at the time. Since the accident, when I sleep on my back I have neck pain and numbness in the ring and 5th fingers of both hands. Sometimes I will have minor headaches associated with these symptoms. If I change positions the symptoms of numbness go away within 15 minutes but I may have the headache for 12 hours or more. This is happening with greater frequency lately. I am wary of seeing my flight surgeon about this. Does this sound like a cervical spine compression? Other than not sleeping on my back is there anything else I can do to help this?
Thanks

Hi,
You are right in saying that these symptoms are indeed due to cervical spine compression.
Cervical spinal disc pathology can cause nerve impingement and these nerve impingement are causing symptoms.
I think you should be seeing an orthopaedician at earliest and get imaging done of your cervical spine.
You should discuss and decide regarding further management.
Hope this helps.
Keep me informed if you have any queries,
Bye.
