Link between Alzheimers and soy?

by April2, Jan 13, 2008 08:41PM
Has anybody ever heard of this before? My teenage daughter decided 2 years ago that she wanted to go vegetarian and I started using more soy to make sure she was getting enough protein. Lately, I decided maybe I'd join her to get a little healthier, etc. and I had someone just recently tell me that eating too much soy can lead to Alzheimers. Has anyone else ever heard of this? Should we not eat soy? My friend who told me this said she read this in a book and that they did a study, etc. Has anyone else ever heard of this? Now I'm not sure what to think. I thought soy was supposed to be good for you. It's just a little bean! Anybody know? I'd appreciate more information on it if anybody knows. Thanks,

The cause of Alzheimer’s disease is unknown. Factors which are genetic can be indicated as clear dominant mutations from three genes which account for a low number of early-onset familial AD that have been identified.

I dont believe i have ever eatin soy and ive been diagnosed with alzheimers so im not much help.

I have just been told that I have Early-Onset Alzheimers, moderately progressed. I am 56. I have never eaten more than a teaspoon of soy sauce once a year or so on fried rice.  No one that I know of in my family has been diagnosed with Alzheimers, Early-Onset or otherwise. I do not believe that there is an Alzheimers/Soy connection and have never heard such.  I hope this helps as well.

I used to be a very big believer of soy and ate it ALL the time, in many forms.  I started to notice that my memory was getting very poor.  I was only in my 40's at the time I started eating soy seriously.  I didn't realize how bad it was till I stopped eating it.  I'm now 55 and I've been away from soy for about 3 years now.  The reason I stopped was because I heard someone in a Dr's waiting room talking about how bad it is and why.  The things she was saying made sense to me, even though I was a firm believer that it is good for us.  I always try to keep an open mind and listened to what she had to say.  I then went to Dr Mercola's website and did my own research.  I now stay away from soy and my memory has improved immensely.  Not sure if it's all in my mind (no pun intended hehe) but I'm glad I listened and did my own research.  I don't believe that soy is the only factor in memory loss, but I think more research needs to be done but the soy companies are too big and it's all about money.  We get more soy in foods that we aren't even aware of and we need to all be reading the labels and keep an open mind and do our own research, and just know that of course whatever the soy companies say about their own products is naturally going to be good, after all it's money in their pockets.  I googled "The truth about soy" and found many things but my favorite is Dr Mercola's site because he doesn't benefit from it one way or the other.  Here is a link, and if the link doesn't work just go to mercola.com and search the truth about soy.

Happy searching
I hope this can help someone as it's helped me.
