Facila nerve paralysis

by peggyQ727, Jan 14, 2008 11:22AM
A month ago I had neck and lower face lift (board-certified plastic surgeon, 20 years experience) that resulted in nerve damage to the left side of my face. Mouth droops; nose & eye are lower on that side; lower eyelid slightly turned out; looks like I've had a stroke. Problems were immediately evident (POD2): in addition to the mouth droop there was much more swelling on the left; a 4" hematoma from the top of my ear to the jawbone.  Initial treatment consisted of doctor's manipulating the hematoma (ouch!).  He mentioned opening it & scraping it out, but that never happened.  Also a fluid-filled swelling on top of the hematoma, red and hot; Dr. made an opening in front of ear to drain.  Draining lasted less than a day; same treatment and result on return POD4 and several times after.  Dr told me to put hot compresses on the swelling; two days later recommended ice packs.  Later recommended massaging area vigorously several times/day.  After 3 1/2 wks, decided it was a parotid cyst and has me on something to dry it up.  Eerything I've read says that relieving pressure ASAP is important to allow the nerve to heal.  I'm afraid the delay means there will not be a full recovery of the nerve (even after many months).   Any hope?

You might want to update us all, so this issue gets proper coverage.

I had a cheek implant and genioplasty, 4 years ago, a common plastic surgery (supposedly as docs say), from one of the foremost icons in plastic surgery.  And since then I have a crooked smile, no sense of sensation (perhaps nerves are cut), and one side is sagging down, I cant smile anymore, and saliva droops while eating, and I cut my lips every day or so, and life is very difficult.  I even had surgeries to nerve-graft, but  no success.

Initially the plastic surgeon said, nothing has happened, and this will resolve by itself within 6 months, and now its 4 years, but things have only worsened.

To: Peggy etc.
I had lower face lift 10 years ago, at 62years.   Reading Peggy's comments and those of others, I suppose my surgery was not too bad...although I did think I had bad effects.  At first lower R eyelid was drooping, but this resolved itself in two weeks.   It happened three or four days after surgery and I was sent to eye specialist, who found nothing else wrong with my eye, could do nothing about drooped lid.   I had to pay his consultancy fee myself !  The roughness of the scar can be felt behind L ear and one lobe is now slightly longer than the other.
However, the worst effect, caused by the surgery, is that the trigeminal nerve was damaged on left side of my face.  This started with a tingling from upper ear down towards mouth.  I did not understand and thought it was the effect of the skin dragging down somehow.    this occured and recurred etc. for couple of years, when, suddenly, one night, I got a most excrutiating pain, same area, which made me jump up and scream, involuntarily.  So for three or four years I suffered pain (not so extreme as original, but very severe).   I could not eat properly, sometimes could not speak properly, as any movement was more than painful.  Sometimes it would last a week, and then be gone for few days, just to return along upper gums that side.  I had two teeth removed as it centred in them sometimes.  Another time it was the lower teeth were effected .  This lasted years but It is now six months since I have had any pain.   I never went back about this.  what was the point?  It could not be undone.  The actual facelift was an improvement for some years, but now I look, if anything, a little more lined than my contemporaries.
I would not have surgery again, but I would like to have some procedures done to improve my facial appearance.   Any advice please?
