6 year old acting out

by TexasMomatWitsEnd, Jan 15, 2008 10:38AM
I have a 6 1/2 year old son.  Only child. He is in Kindergarten.  Everything has been great at school, etc. until they started school back in January.  It seems like since he went back to school, he has gotten into trouble every day, he is not abusive to others, just will not listen, blurting out while the teacher is talking, not listening, etc.  And the past few days he has started a nervous habit or wringing his sleeve and chewing on it!  That drives me crazy.  We have had problems with him listening at home, we need to tell him to do things at least 5 times before he does it and by that point we are practically yelling.  Could this be just a "phase" or possibly something else?  We have tried taking toys away, tv, going to be early, etc.  It does not seem to phase him.

This was my son when he was 5.  He was diagnosed with ADHD.  He did get on medication, but the chewing and wringing continued on tough days and when his meds wore off.  He also has an anxiety disorder.  The anxiety alone can cause the ADHD symptoms, so you have to be careful.  You might want to go to your doctor first, then possibly a therapist or psychologist.  My son is now 11 1/2 and still takes meds, goes to therapy and is involved with neurofeedback therapy, and we are doing very well.
Good luck and God bless
