Short acute eye pain

by Susie30, Jan 15, 2008 01:31PM
Hi,

My 76 year old mother suffers from Dry Macular Degeneration, as well as high blood pressure.

6-8 weeks ago she had two episodes of a really painful stabbing sensation in one of her eyes, the pain was so intense it made her wince, cover her eye and stop what she was doing, it felt like she would imagine a needle piercing her eye.
The next morning her eyesight had changed and when reading, the words rose and fell on the line in a V shape a number of times along the line. she also noticed that road signs are showing an extra false line.
Over the last couple of weeks her eyesight is gradually improving and now the double line vision has gone.

Any idea what this is likely to have been? Is it related to the macular degeneration or is it another problem? Is it likely to re-occur? can anything be done to prevent this happening again?

Sorry for so many questions, thanks for your help and advice.

To: EXAM ASAP
You mother needs to see an ophthalmologist ASAP as this can be a sign that the dry ARMD has converted to wet ARMD. The treatment of wetARMD must be started as soon as possible to prevent large amounts of blood from making scars.

A dry ARMD patient that has a sudden change in vision, distortion or curvy amsler grid is an EYE EMERGENCY.

Call tomorrow and insist she be seen.
