Recovery from retinal tear

by Retina, Jan 16, 2008 03:35AM
My dad suddenly lost his vision in his right eye last week. I rushed him to the hospital and they diagnosed a retinal tear. (My dad had cataract surgery in both his eyes 2 years ago).

Given the amount of hemorrhage, the retinal specialist said he could not perform laser treatment but instead performed a 'Retinal Cryopexy' to seal the tear. The doctor ruled out a retinal detachment. But it has been more than a week since the procedure but my dad has not even regained 10% of the vision. My questions are:

a) How long does it typically take for hemorrhage to subside and vision return to normalcy after a tear fix using Retinal cryopexy?
b) Can my dad travel on a flight? Will there be any complications due to air pressure difference?

Only his surgeon can answer the questions because it depends on the amount and location of bleeding.  Flying should not be a problem as no air or gas injected into the eye.

Call the surgeons office and ask these questions

Dr.Hagan,
Thank you for your prompt response. A couple of follow up queries:
a) Is the occurrence of the retinal tear related to the cataract surgery performed earlier? My dad doesn't have any BP or known heart issues. So we were wondering what causes an increase in eye pressure to create a retinal tear.
b) What are the chances of the tear occurring in the other eye? Is there any way to monitor it pro actively rather than wait for floaters to appear?
