GERD and Barretts Esophagus

by CatrionaniT, Jan 18, 2008 11:03AM
I'm about to have Nissen Fundoplication surgery (Tuesday) for the treatment of GERD as it has progressed to Barretts although thankfully there are no signs of dysplasia.  I have suffered with GERD since I was 17 and am now 33.  Reading up, I understand that Barretts normally affects white men over 50, so I don't know what's happened with me!  My father sadly passed away from complications associated with Barretts at 41 and I'm doing everything I can to prevent the same thing happening to me.  Thankfully things have progressed so much since then in the medical profession and I'm thankful that I am having the surgery.  What I would like to know is by having this surgery, will it slow down the progession of the Barretts?

Hi CatrionaniT,
Nissen's fundoplication may stop the progression and may even can cause regression of Barrett's esophagus. This of course -only if the surgery is successful.

But you should remember, not all patients show improvement.
