chemo or not?

by mlee24, Jan 20, 2008 03:16AM
I posted this question earlier, but am not sure I did it correctly, so if there is a double, please forgive me.
I recently had bi lateral mastectomy surgery (1/11/08). I saw my surgeon on the 18th and she told me that all the tissue was sent away and the pathology report came back with no more cancer. I had had a lumpectomy and breast reduction on 11/6/07. With the results such as they were, is it necessary for me to have chemotherapy? Thank you!

Dear mlee24:  Whether chemotherapy would be recommended would depend upon the cancer that was removed.  If all of the cancer was removed in the lumpectomy, this would be the information an oncologist would use to determine whether chemotherapy would be recommended.  Some things that would be considered would be the size of the tumor, type of tumor, whether lymph nodes are positive, estrogen and progesterone receptor status, and HER2 status.  It may be worth meeting with an oncologist so that all of this could be discussed with you along with recommendations for further treatment/surveillance.
