Question about lymph nodes and cancer

by caitlinmorgan, Jan 20, 2008 11:52AM
I am just wondering if anyone that has been diagnosed also noticed enlarged lymph nodes in the groin/pelvic area?  I had a very large groin lymph node that was biopsied almost nine months ago.  It came back as a 'reactive' node, meaning that it was reacting to something but no cancer cells were found.

I am waiting on my pathology report from my surgery on Wednesday to remove a 4.5 cm complex cyst that was leaking fluid/blood into my abdomen.  I am now wondering if perhaps the enlarged lymph node many months ago was an early sign of something....my ob/gyn is not sure.  He says it could be but he says it could also just be a coincidence...

Thanks, Caitlin

When I had cysts, I also had a VERY large lymph node in my groin.  I was referrred to a surgeon for biopsy, but he seemed to think it was reactive and decided to wait and see if it would get smaller.  It did get somewhat smaller as my cysts resolved.  I have also noticed enlarged lymph nodes when I had cysts before.  I asked the GP, my OB/GYN, and the surgeon if they could be related to the cysts and none of them thought so.  However, my personal experience leads me to believe that they are.  I wonder if the immune system in some people just reacts that way to ovarian cysts.  It certainly seemd to be the case with me.  I wish you the best of luck on your path report!  Teresa

Hi Caitlin... I have a lymph node in the left side groin area, which I noticed was swollen. Went and saw my Gyno/Surgeon and he sent me for a fine needle biopsy. It came back as positive to cancer. That was in Oct.06. I've had chemo 'off and on' since then, and the node has reduced so much, that it's hard to detect, so I think the chemo is controlling it. My Oncol tells me that he is sure that this node is the only one affected, so it's an isolated case for me, so I'm hoping he is right. Hopefully in your case, there could be other reasons for the lymph node being enlarged, as you say there were no cancer cells found, so that seems positive. Just want to wish you all the best, and hoping that everything will be o.k, for  you....hugs...Helen...
