grandson dreas

my grandson, dreas, has a continual runny nose; thick and clear to cloudy mucus.  His breathing is always heavy or congested when trying to breath through his nose.  Sleeping, he sounds terrible; raspy or gravelly.  Which direction do we go with trying to figure out what is wrong?  Is the mucus born in his sinus cavity what?  Is this an allergic reaction to something?  He seems to have been born with this or shortly thereafter he began having breathing problems.  any suggestions?  we are trying to arrange to get him to a specialist, however, current insurance may not cover a visit or therapy.  the boy is now, almost, 18 months old.

It does sound a lot like he has an allergy. Have you tried giving him Children's claritin to see if it helps? It it helps then you should visit an allergist and do all the work at home to figure out what he is allergic to.
Good luck

It does sound like he has allergies.  Take away all the stuffed animals (especially in his bed / crib) - I know that sucks - make sure to wash all bedding every week, this helps (not cures) with allergies (my son has them); my dr also advised me to get allergin resisting bedsheets for my son (picked them up at Walmart).  Advised against carpets, anything that you can think of that will hold dust.  My son also had cat allergies so he can't be around cats (even in the same house as them, not just the same room).  No fans (air conditioners are better), get an air purifier for the room, it helps.

If you can, you should see an allergist or pediatrician.

Good Luck.

You should try nasal flushes, I give them to my 6 year old with asthma/ allergies/ croup.  And just gave a little flush to my 18 month old.  It really clears out the sinuses.  Especially before bed. But, be easy on his little nose just a little saline is all it will take. neil med sinus rinse pediatric starter kit, Or saline drops.  Do you have animals in home, if so consider that might be causing it. Cut back on milk or dairy product it makes the mucus thicker.  My 6 year old finally had adenoids and tonsils out, and I have a feeling my little on will need this eventially.  I would definatly get a referal to ENT from his pediatrician.  Especially mention the trouble sleeping.  It sounds like allergies, combined with sinus infection...so insist on antibiotics. Also eventially you might want to see allergist for skin test to find out what he is allergic to for sure.  Sometimes having a referal will help with the insurance covering appointments the specialist.  hope this helps
