encopresis in 4.5 yr old

My daughter (4.5 yrs old) was diagnosed with encopresis nearly a year and a half ago.  We started out going to our family doctor and eventually he referred us to a pediatric gastroenterologist whom we've been seeing for the last 9 months. We've tried every suggestion made and have tried several different medications to help her through this, but we're just not seeing much progress.  Both my husband and I have intestional issues - he has diverticulosis and I have IBS.  Is is possible that that there is something hereditary that could be going on or is it typical for encopresis to be this hard to resolve?  Are there alternatives to the standard approach of medication?  I'm concerned that when she goes into kindergarten next year there will be social consequences for her.  My heart breaks just thinking of the possible emotional pain she might go through due to this.
