Short menstral cycles

Ever since I went off the pill 3 years ago I have had periods that have fluctuated from 17 day cycles to 23 day cycles, the average has been 23 day cycles. Twice last year I actually had 28 day cycles. I have been hoping to become pregnant but was recently told by a friend that with cycles that were shorter then 28 days the egg was not given time to mature before it passed however since I was still having reqular periods that was a good sign and she suggested Clomid. Is there any other option besides taking Clomid? What is causing the shorter cycles? Is there anything that I can do to try to regulate them? I have never been pregnant however several years ago I donated eggs to a friend, who did get pregnant with twins however they had to keep me on the meds longer then normal to get viable eggs and at that I did not produce as many as I should have. Is there a connection between the prolonged response to the meds and the short cycles?

I do not think there is a connection between the prolonged response to meds and the short cycles. Regarding the short cycles, are you having 17-23 days between (1) the first day of each period, or (2) from the last day of one period until the first day of the next? If (1), then your periods are short. If (2), they may fall within normal. The couses of the shorter cycles could be several:
1) There may be no cause at all and the problem may correct itself
2) You may not be ovulating and the periods are actually episodes of irregular bleeding
3) You may have short cycles in which case there may not be enough time for your uterine lining to develop to support a pregnancy
4) What is your age? You may have shorter periods as a function of age - this tends to happen as women get older and the ovaries lose function

I would recommend consulting with a reproductive endocrinologist. An REI can figure out if you are ovulating, and can check you ovarian function. They will also help you to decide whether or not you truly need to consider taking medication such as clomid, or not.
