Ovulating but Amennorhea? Please, any ideas what is wrong with me?

by gebbeth, Jul 25, 2007 12:00AM
I haven't had a period in SEVEN YEARS.  was on the pill for 17 years. Stopped about 6 months ago. Still no period.

Recently, went to see a reproductive specialist.  She did a vaginal ultrasound. She said everything, including my uterine lining, looked normal. I asked her about cervical stenosis as I have had a LEEP (including cervical canal) but she said at least the ultrasound looked normal.

She said it looked like I ovulated, and  I have eggs, etc. She expected my endometrial lining would be too thick or too thin after not having had a period for so long, but it looked normal/medium thickness.  They did blood tests, which were borderline but said I did ovulate.  And, she said she expected I'd get my period within a week.

So what happened?

Same thing that happened the last 4 months- 2 days of cramps.. and NOTHING.  Just a little white, slightly thick, milky discharge (or lubrication) for a few days.

Anyone have any idea what is wrong with me?  Help?

They did a progestin challenge test 2 months ago which I failed.

Now, I'm going to have to do that, again.

And, when/if that fails, I'll have to do a EStrogen then progestin.

I am SO frustrated.  34, running out of fertility time!

Anyone have any ideas?  Help please?

Hi there - I would approach things in two steps.

First, it is important to know for sure if you are ovulating. The best/only way to know for sure is to get progesterone levels, which are blood tests. A progesterone level greater than 3 almost always means ovulation. If your value was 'borderline', it may be that you have not ovulated. Also, sometimes the lab can make a mistake, so that one reassuring value, especially without a period to follow, may have just been a lab error. So first step would be to get a progesterone level weekly, until the level exceeds 3 or even 5. Once it does, I would recommend repeating in 5-7 days just to confirm.

If it is not > 3, I would suggest repeating weekly for at least 5 weeks in a row.

This will tell you whether or not you are ovulating, and if you are ovulating you should either get a period or get pregnant.

If the progesterone DEFINITELY proves ovulation, and you still do not get a period, then an evaluation of your uterine cavity is worthwhile with a hysterosalpingogram, saline ultrasound, or hysteroscopy.

What hormones did your doctor check? He/she should check FSH, LH, estradiol. progesterone, prolactin, TSH.

Did you have any history in the past of a D&C operation, especially after a pregnancy? What is your weight. Do you have any hot flushes? Do you have any breast discharge. Do you have any excessive hair growth?

Good luck!
