Does IVF incite menopause?

by petuniajay, Aug 14, 2007 12:00AM
Does the stimulation and removal of multiple eggs during IVF treatments onset menopause, and depending on whether the answer is yes or no, why?

by Forum-M.D.-SP, Aug 17, 2007 12:00AM
The answer is no. The reason is that, every month, there is a group of potential eggs from which the one egg that women normally realease without fertility drugs is chosen. This group, called the antral follicle cohort, consists of 8-10 potential eggs on average. One egg gets picked - the other 7-9 eggs stop developing. In addition, there are tens or hundreds of thousands of other eggs in the ovary that are not picked as potential 'candidates' to be the one dominant egg of the month. Fertilty drugs only act on the antral follicle cohort, to 'rescue' the 8-10 additional eggs. Thus, the fertility drugs are not depleting the large pool and so do not accelerate menopause.

Does this make sense?

Great question, by the way...and good luck!
