Progesterone by shot or in the form of Vaginal suppositories

I will have ICSI in next month. Here, most hospitals currently only have the progesterone by a shot. We learn that progesterone supplementation can be given in the form of vaginal suppositories such as Cyclogest.
1. What's the difference fot these 2 types for our case?
2. If I take Cyclogest, how can we use it? 1 400mg every day or 2 400mg every day? How long?

There are several ways of taking progesterone for infertility treatment. One is the shot. Another is a vaginal preparation called crinone applied once a day (available in the USA and Canada, not sure about availability in Europe). A third medication, micronized progesgerone, is also given intravaginally two or three times daily. Cyclogest is an intravaginal progesterone delivery system available in Europe but not the USA.

My feeling is that all ways of giving progesterone are equivalent. At USF IVF, we use micronized progesterone intravaginally three times daily for most patient, but use the shots for some. Six of one, half dozen of the other, except the shots are definitely more uncomfortable.

You should discuss your options with your infertility doctor - that person will be able to tell you if you can/should take the cyclogest, and for how long.

Good luck!

I took the suppositories with IUI.  I'm now taking the injection(oil base) with IVF.  They hurt like hell.  I have to numb my backside before DH gives it to me.

I get my progesterone by shot.  I asked my RE about the other methods, but she kind of dismissed them.  I agree - they really do hurt!  I have to numb my backside for about 20 minutes.

I did IVF with ICSI 8/7 and am now pregant. Every morning I have to put prog. cream inside my vagaina ... Every evening I get 1 cc of prog. in oil injected into my sore hips. The shots are bearable, but can be painful. My friend started giving them to me and she did a great job ... hardly no pain. My husband has been giving them to me for the past 2 weeks, since running to my friend's house every evening was getting to be a pain for both of us. It helps if the person giving the shot squeezes the skin together while giving the injection ... not too hard, just enough to provide some pressure at the site. Be sure to rub it afterwards. I apply warm heat for about 10 min. after, too. I use one of those things you can warm up in the microwave. Tell your shot giver to be sure to inject the prog. in oil slowly ... make it a count of 30. Also, ask them not to push the needle harder into your hip as they are pushing in the oil!! My husband is famous for that ... lots more pain if they do that. Feels like you got hit in the hip by a sharp stick for days.

I get my prgesterone by shot too.  Out of the 10 days It has stung about 2..My husband gives me the shot but we were told by the nurse not to squeeze the skin together before the injection.  What really helps is a thin thin needle.  We use the larger needle to extract the progesterone from the bottle (20G 1 1/2 needle) - then take that needle out and put the thin needle (25G 1 1/2) for the injection - doesn't hurt at all.  Make sure the alchohol from wiping the spot before the needle is dry before doing the injection too.  Hope this helps :)

I also had the shots, although off of them since sunday (pregnancy test negative) but am having itchy welts on top of the exact same spots as where my hubby was giving me the shots. Anyone experiencing that? Could I be having a reaction at this stafe of the game. It really doesn't matter at this point since I'm not pregnant.
