Folic acid and baby asprin while trying to get pregnant, plus are we doing it right?

by Maria36, Oct 31, 2007 12:00AM
My husband and I have just started trying to get pregnant after terminating my pregnancy on Oct 10th, due to the fact that we did not get a heartbeat on the u/s. After surgery my doctor said that it all went very well and we can start having unprotected sex after 15 days. My question is when is it normal to expect my period now? And I started taking folic acid (a dietary supplement of folic acid and vitamin B12 - 400 mg per day, which is one pill dosage) just to be on the safe side. Is that ok? Should I also start taking baby asprine while we are trying to get pregnant?

Also, we usually have intercourse in the evenings right before going to bed. I lay on my back or on my side for sure for about 30 minutes, or go straight to sleep. I noticed that if I get up after 30 minutes or even on the next morning I experience leakage. Does this mean that penetration was not deep enough and the sperm just all leak out or is it normal to have some leakage and still have a good chance of the sperm fertilizing an egg?

And finally, my husband had his left testicle removed when he was a baby. Due to this fact do we still have a 50/50 chance of a baby of either sex or is it now certain that we can have only boys? Its just something someone told me and I wanted to know if this has a scientifically true.

Thank you very much for your time and help

Dear Maria36-

Let me try to answer your questions as best I can.

1) You can expect a period any time from 4-6 weeks after your D&C, as long as your periods are usually regular.

2) It is not necessary to start low dose aspirin. For several years we recommended this, but more recent research shows that there is no benefit

3) Leaking after intercourse is normal and expected. Remember that millions of sperm are in the ejaculate and only one fertilizes the egg. Of all the millions of sperm that get deposited in the vagina with intercourse, most leak out, many are trapped in the cervix, and only a few swim through the uterus to have a chance to fertilize the egg at the far end of the fallopian tube. This has nothing to do with depth of penetration

4) The fact that your husband has only one testicle has no bearing on the sex of your babies - equal chances of boy vs girl.

Very sorry about the miscarriage. This is not due to anything you did, and there is n ot likely anything you need to do to increase your chances of having a normal pregnancy. Unfortunately, about 20% of all pregnancies end in miscarriages. After a miscarriage, the odds are very high (>80%) that the next pregnancy will be normal and healthy.

I hope things work out for you.

My RE said that you'd get your period 4-6 weeks after a loss like that...I'm assuming a D&C?
