DNA fragmentation testing, what do you think??

by mature momma, Jan 12, 2008 12:00AM
Hi,
DNA fragmentation testing. I have read that this can be a reason for IVF failure. My husbands sperm test(mobility, count, etc.) all were good. We have done ICSI with all cycles. What do you know about this test, how reliable is it and when should you consider having it done? Also some of the ladies here talk of immune testing. What kind? I am doing 3rd cycle with donor soon and want all the info to have a positive result this time. I am 46 and every second is dear to me.
Thank you in advance for your time and answers.

Immune testing is not helpful.

DNA fragmentation testing may be of some help. If your husband's sperm has excessive DNA fragmentation, there is some evidence in the literature that this can be a reason for IVF failure, although not everyone agrees with this. The question for you is what you will do with the information. If the DNA fragmentation testing is reassuring, then of course you will move forward with the planned 3rd cycle. If the DNA fragmentation testing is not normal, would you stop IVF with donor, or consider a sperm donor along with the egg donor? if the DNA fragmentation testing will not infuence your final choice re treatment, then you may not want to get it done. Or...even if you decide to go forward with treatment, will having knowledge alone be helpful to you?

I order the testing from time to time, including recently - it has been helpful for some of my patients.

Hi Debra, I was just going to tell you that I posted a note to you below (and also on the 35+ site) about how I think I'm maybe blocked from sending you messages.  (See my post below for details.)  This is an interesting question you've asked the doctor.  I've never heard of this type of testing....
