Please, I need an Opinion

by luvinsmiles77, Jan 23, 2008 10:32AM
Hello,
My daughter is 6 (last week) and she went to VPK at 4 and then to kindergarten in August.  Since Kindergarten she gets in trouble at school every day (at least 4 out of 5 days) she did ride the bus but got suspended twice because she wanted to be a car rider.  The teacher gets calls from the other parents because she is bossy.  She doesn’t sit down, she talks nonstop, she is very bright, already reading and match and writes very well.  But her behavior is out of control. Per the teacher’s, she is loud, she disrupts, talks out of turn doesn’t practice self control….. On her report card this is what they wrote: Yazmene comes to class with a great attitude towards learning. She is extremely conscientious about her work. She is a wonderful writer and reader…. Yazmene’s goal is to work on self control, she will often call out and disrupt the class lesson, and she needs to work on being respectful toward others.  She is not following teacher direction consistently.  I took her to a pediatrician who specializes in adhd, because he treated my younger brother for years… My mom also has it… So the pediatrician sent me to a psychiatrist, and we saw him 4 times.  The teacher, guidance counselor and before/after school teachers filled out all the paperwork, and I also brought in all of her referrals and intervention reports.  He then told me it was a mood disorder and he referred me to the nurse practitioner for $150.00 (I have no insurance) In one month I have spent 550.00, and she basically asked me all the same stuff the other guy did… He said he was going to go over his diagnosis with her… I walk into the office and she doesn’t have a  clue and tells me she wants to put her on such and such.. She asks me how much my insurance covers for meds, and I tell her I don’t have insurance (which I had told her earlier in the appointment) and she says, Oh.  Well I don’t have samples of this one…. Then we will try this one because I have samples of it… Give her ½ tablet every morning, and if she gets tired give it to her at night……. She hands me the sample…… I said what do I look for?  She said what do you mean???? I said, side effects, what????????? She says, High temperature, stiff joints…… She said that she will see me in a month (150.00) and she will just keep up with my daughter through the psychiatrist (100.00 a week)… That would be 550.00 a month……… My problem is this….. The pediatrician said it was a classic case of adhd, and I would go see the psychiatrist and he would give his recommendation to the pediatrician… Well because it’s a mood disorder, I have to stay at the psychiatric office instead of the pediatrician office………… I feel as though they made this mood disorder up, just to keep my daughter at this office…….. She never has downs… She is always happy and hyperactive, and talking and laughing…. There are times a couple times a week where she is aggressive, but like a normal, don’t get your way kid…… My question is, what do I do…. She has been in so much trouble that every day that I pick her up, is like what did she do today?????? She is loud so she gets recognized the quickest…. But I don’t agree with the mood disorder, and she hands me the sample with no handouts, nothing about the medication or anything… NOTHING…. Does she think I’m going to go home and just start her on something I know nothing about??????????????????? How do these doctors charge 150.00 for a 45min appointment and then give you a script for a med for a 6 year old???? The medication is Abilify….. I almost feel like it’s like taking your car to a mechanic for an oil leak, and you go in to pick it up and there are 12 other things wrong with it??????  Do I believe her??? What is my next step???? I’m a single mom, and I am sad because I am at a loss financially, but I will do anything for my daughter because she is my life…….  If you could give me your opinions, I would really appreciate it... Thank you...

First....I would recommend that you get a new opinion....realizing that doing that is difficult due to the financial situation, but you may be able to find a community health clinic that uses a sliding scale fee.....second, I would really check again about the abilify, in searching the manufacturers website, it is used for bipolar and schizophrenia....and it's not used in pediatrics....the trials they list only go down in age to 13-17...good luck, and let me know if there's anything I can do to help!
