Drive-Thru Mastectomies

Marcia Cross, an actress on Desperate Housewives, has been lobbying Congress on drive-thru mastectomies—a term used because patients are discharged the same day as a mastectomy. A mastectomy is a very serious surgery and can result in complications. Also, the psychological trauma of the surgery can slow the healing process—unlike the hopefulness experienced when a woman experiences breast augmentation. Cross handed Congress a petition with 20 million signatures that was collected online (Lifetime website) by Lifetime television viewers (Fox).
“The petition supports legislation that would let a woman and her doctor decide when it's time to go home”(Fox).

Lopping off a body part requires time to heal. A woman’s breast is no less important than a leg. If a leg is amputated, a longer hospital stay is required and needed.

Marcia Cross:

“Cross said she can't understand why the act has been in Congress for ten years without being passed” (Fox).

It really doesn’t surprise me that Congress has been sitting on this for ten years given that there is a shortage of mammary glands in both Houses. Perhaps if it were a prostate bill, it would be given more consideration.

In fact,

“After a prostatectomy, a man will stay in the hospital up to five days, although the length of hospital stays for most surgical procedures continues to decrease. The length of stay will depend on a man's overall health, speed of recovery, and the nature of the surgery” (ehealthmd).

In case, members of Congress are confused, I have posted an illustration of a mammary gland. Mammary glands deserve more respect.
