Ear pain after root canals

by Cindee56, Jan 26, 2008 10:33PM
Hi, I posted a similar topic on the dental board but got no response.  I really need help.  I am 51 yrs. old and I have had about 12 root canals in my lifetime.  I had a lot of decay and large fillings, and I did this on the advice of a family member (who is a dentist--a very good one) to save my teeth.  Now most of my teeth are crowns and, although, they look good, I am starting to have problems with needing to get root canals *retreated.*  I had two in particular, large molars, that have caused me so much pain with pain shooting up to my ear.  The endodontist retreated them and tells me they *look great* but I am still in pain.  Chewing is uncomfortable, and I still get pain in my ear on whichever side the tooth is on.  I had these done in the summer, but it's January and they still don't feel right.

My regular dentist said the only other thing I can do is get those teeth extracted and then get a bridge put in.  I just want to be out of pain.  It is really up to me, and I don't know what to do.  I want to keep my teeth, but I feel like the root canals are no longer working (plus they are really expensive).  I would welcome any advice.

There are other treatment such as apicoectomy (root surgery) which may help you save the teeth.  You should see a Board Certified Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon to discuss your particular options.

If extractions are recommended, you may want to consider dental implants which cannot get cavities like teeth under crowns and bridges.

Thank you for your prompt response.  I did have an apico on another tooth on the top, it seemed to work OK, but this was not fun to go through.  I see see you are in NJ, I live in NJ also.  Maybe I will give you a call, lol.
