Starting Clomid w/ IUI and Trigger shot

by Celwed, Jan 28, 2008 01:28PM
Does this sound right??
On days 3-7 I am to take 100mg of Clomid after that I am to monitor ovulation thru OPK's on the night that I get a positive I am to go in the very next morning to schedual the IUI. That morning they will give me a shot of Ovidrel.
I thought you were supposed to take the shot before the IUI..
This is new for me does anyone know how this works exactly? Will this process work??
Any advice is appreciated.

Thanks!!!

Dear Celwed - there are several ways to approach this. One approach is to do urine OPK testing as you are doing, and have an IUI the next AM. This is the approach I often take with my patients. A second approach is to do ultrasound monitoring, and give ovidrel when ultrasound shows a mature follicle. Although I have not used the approach your doctor is taking, it is a reasonable approach in my opinion, by supplementing your body's own LH trigger with HCG. To explain how this works, there is a hormone from your pituitary gland called LH, which stand for luteinizing hormone. LH starts to surge to high levels in the blood 36h before ovulation. It is this surge which is the body's natural ovulation trigger. It is also what is pickedu up by OPK testing. HCG biochemically is very similar to LH, and is used by fertility doctors because it works just like LH, to act as an ovulation trigger. I would encourage you to speak with your fertility doctor - it is important that you understand your treatment. Good luck!
