Poor U/S readings at 7 weeks

by rene67, Jan 29, 2008 01:01PM
I am 40 and on my 3rd pregnancy (the previous 2 ended in miscarriage, 2006 & 2007).  My doctor ordered a transvaginal ultrasound, which showed a fetal pole and cardiac activity.  However, I am dating a week behind plus the hb was low (104).

She wants to be optimistic, but thinks my chance of a successful outcome is now 50/50.  I feel I have no chance.  Both previous miscarriages were "missed abortions" which survived to around 6-7 weeks.  My last pregnancy also showed cardiac activity (at 8 weeks) with growth a week behind.  By a 9 week U/S, there was no cardiac and growth had stopped.

Am I right to think that there is no chance, or could things turnaround at this point?  I am rather distraught right now, but if there is any hope, I'd like to keep that in mind.  I have a follow-up U/S next week and fear for the inevitable.

Thank you.

Hello,

Yes, there is a risk of miscarriage (as you well know).  Only time will tell.

I wish you well.

Hi, I know exactly how you are feeling. I have had 3 miscarriages in a row. I found out I was pregnant this time and took time off work to rest and be out of a stressful environment to see if this would help. I still had bleeding. According to my dates I should be 9 weeks but transvaginal scans show me less, however I do know I ovulate late on in my cycle and this could explain this. Last week scan did show a heartbeat, which I didn't think they would get. I thought it would be a missed miscarriage, but because of bleeding, they still think I could miscarry again. I am a nervous wreck, and so stressed- my stomach is doing backflips and I am not sleeping. I know this won't help but unless someone has been through it they don't understand. And it gets worse the more miscarriages you have. Every visit to the bathroom is devastating. I go back for another scan in 1 week. I am keeping my fingers crossed. I hope everything works out for you. Good luck and take care. xxx

Unfortunately my scan yesterday was not good.  I should be 8w1d but reading 6w3d.  Plus heartbeat that was 104 dropped to 70s.  This always indicates embryonic demise.  I will likely get a D&C next week because past 2 did not expel naturally, even after weeks of carrying around nonviable embryo.

I completly feel for you Hopefulmum, but if you ovulate late there is still hope, even with bleeding.  Try not to stress (I know its hard).  I'm now stressing because now I'm 40 and am afraid my time is running out. But honestly there is little you can do to change the situation.  Not sure how it is in UK, but because of my 3 miscarriages I will now get referred to fertility practice. I'm not sure it will help (I haven't had problems conceiving and am basically healthy), but its a start.  I hope you don't need that, but also hope it is an option for you if need be.
