Root Canal or Extraction #2 tooth

My #2 tooth broke a while back. I went to the dentist who said I need a root canal, post and crown OR I can have the tooth pulled. He said the problem with pulling the tooth is that the tooth above it would grow and weaken and I would probably have to have it pulled in a few years.
I am confused by which procedure to choose. Obviously the extraction is much less expensive and it would not affect my smile. But I also don't want to do something that might cause later problems.

I always prefer if at all possible, to save a tooth and not extract. There are times when pulling the tooth may be a better solution and possibly more conservative than trying to heroically save a tooth. If your dentist thinks the tooth can be salvaged for a reasonable length of time, I would do the root canal. You could always get a second opinion.
