Question on labs

by betsygirl2, Jan 30, 2008 08:27AM
I believe I was infected with HSV on Friday 1-11-08.  My symptoms did not appear until the following Wednesday 1-16-08.  I am in the healthcare field and put myself on Acyclovir 800mg tid for 3 days.  The symptoms were not eradicated so I put myself on Valtrex 1g bid for 10 days.  I went for labs on 1-25-08 and the IgG was negative at 0.03.  The HSV IgM Ab titer however has just come back at 1:160.  I have read so much on the innacurracy of these tests.  I am looking for your opinion as to whether I should consider myself infected and take the necessary precautions (I am married 22 years & this was not my husband who infected me) or am I in a holding pattern until 2 or 3 months from now when I can repeat the IgG to see if it is positive?

Regarding your blood work, if it is a recent infection your blood work would not show any antibody for this virus that soon.  Another question have you ever had cold sores, 80% of the population has been exposed to HSV1.  That could be what the test results show.  But if you believe you were RECENTLY infected 1-11-08, there is unfortunately no way you can test positive for hsv2 that quickly.  It doesnt look by what you posted they did a herpes select test to determine which type you may have.  Request that test and then you will have your answer, if you know you definately you have been recently exposed, it is best to wait at least 12 weeks to get an accurate test result.  Hope this helps.  Take care...

Thanks for your response.  To answer your question no I have never had a cold sore. I did have the IgG Herpes Select and that was negative.

Then if you have never been exposed to hsv1 or hsv2 and you think you have a recent exposure 1-11-08 then of course the test would be negative because as I stated earlier the antibodies would not have been formed in your blood yet it is way to early, go back at 12 weeks after so called exposure then get tested and that will be the right answer.  By the way you never explain WHY you think you were exposed on that day?  Did the gentleman tell you he had herpes?  Just curious, why you think you have been exposed.  Take care.  :))

That was the only day I was with this person.  No he did not tell me but I had physical symptoms, rash and pimple like blisters 5 days later.  Mild with no more than 8 lesions.  I medicated myself right away and washed any open lesions with Betadine.  My partner states he has never had any symptoms, which I understand is not unusual.  He is married also and states his wife is not affected, but they have not been together in many months.
