Blood tests a bit abnormal...How did you first find out?

I just received blood and urine tests back that resulted in abnormal levels of albumin, bilirubin and alt/sgpt. Here are the results based on the “reference range”

Albumin – 5.2H  (Normal range- 3.5-5.0)
Bilirubin – 1.3H  (Normal range- 0-1.2)
ALT/SGPT – 18 L (Normal range- 20-65)


My doctor said that this can be due to an increase in drinking or too much drinking. I do drink 3-4 times a week, I know this isn’t healthy but it’s just generally what I do with my friends at night and on the weekends.

Some facts of note after reading more about these levels online…

I didn’t eat or drink anything after 7:00pm the night before the time of the test ( 10:00am next day)

I drink a lot of coffee?

I also take Adderall sometimes to concentrate

The nurse who took my blood did have a hard time finding the vein…

Although I realize that these fluctuations are mild, it concerns me that they are all within the same category and somewhat related. I could only find information online about excessive fluctuations in these levels and not just a combination of these mild fluctuations.

Is there anyway this could be due to hepatitis, hiv or other things like that?

I really have no other symptoms of anything.

You liver enzymes - alt and ast are low and in the normal range.  When I was diagosed mine were in the 200s so it was quite obvious something was killing the cells in my liver.

Your numbers don't seem very far off the mark at all to me and I'd imagine it could be just about anything but it's not likely HCV or HIV. If you are nervous just ask for that blood test and then don't worry about it anymore.

Thanks, I know it seems like it is prob nothing. I am taking the blood test tomorrow it's just that I can't get it off my mind. Plus, I'll have to wait another week after that for results. Thank you for the comparison though, I am curious if anyone else received results similar to mine when they found out they had hcv or hiv.

I was diagnosed in the course of the doctor trying to find out what was causing my pain in the right upper quadrant of my abdomen.  My liver functions were not that elevated at that point in time.  They were possibly in the 40's range.  My gallbladder sono was normal.  He'd done a barium low GI study.  And a more detailed type of gallbladder test, all normal.  So, finally, he ran the hepatitis panel and that's when I came back being positive for Hep C.  After that he ran the RIBA blood test and it showed an active infection.  I've been chronic/active ever since.

Your alt of 18 is great, though women typically have a lower level than men.  albumin will be low when your liver is under stress and bilirubin will be high.  When someone has jaundice (yellow skin) their bilirubin level is usually >2.5 or so.

If you don't have a risk factor for hepatitis, lay off the alcohol for a while and I'll bet the bilirubin comes down.

ALT in the teens is normal for women and enviable at this board. ;)  Lab standards haven't always kept up with what we're learning about the liver.  Your ALT is fine.
