Help, i smoked weed pregnant! please talk to me a doctor, nurse or someone!!!

by worriedbecauseiwasstupid, Jan 31, 2008 12:51AM
My name is jenny and i smoked weed for a long time everyday, and when i found out i was pregnant i was already 3 months and in disbelief, so i continued to smoke weed sometimes up to 3 times a day with cigarettes untill about my 7th month in pregnancy, then it all caught up with me and i quit smoking weed and cigarettes cold turkey and i have not smoked either since. But everyday i am terribly worried that i may have done damage or that they will find thc in my baby and do something like take it away. I feel incredibly guilty and i feel like the most stupid person on earth for doing all that smoking while pregnant, i will never even go back to smoking either again. I cant even believe that i let a bad addiction to marijuana go that far. Will someone please tell me if my baby is going to be ok? im am loosing sleep over my stupid actions and even though i quit i still feel very very guilty. Do they test the baby? will he be ok?

I am glad that you decided to give it up, but unfournatly there will be no way to tell if the baby ok until he/or she is born..... Have the dr's told you that the baby look's fine ? Here is what i found on the internet.... There's more but i just googled it...

Some scientific studies have found that babies born to women who used marijuana during their pregnancy display altered responses to visual stimulation, increased tremors, and a high pitched cry, which may indicate problems with nervous system development. During pre- and early school years, marijuana-exposed children have been reported to have more behavioral problems and difficulties with sustained attention and memory than nonexposed children.

Researchers are not certain whether any effects of marijuana during pregnancy persist as the child grows up; however, because some parts of the brain continue to develop into adolescence, it is also possible that certain kinds of problems will become more evident as the child matures.

That can really cause birth defects in your baby, not trying to scare you. I don't know if they tests babies or not, But, I hope your baby will be born healthy and you don't have to worry about him.  It's great you stopped. An addiction is hard to stop so don't be so hard on yourself. You realized your actions weren't the greatest in the world and you stopped that counts for something! Most women who know they shouldn't just don't care.  You need a stress free environment right now. Do it for your baby.

Just be strong for your baby right now. :)

Have you informed your Doctor that you were doing this?  If not it might be a good idea to do so......Social services has been known (in NY State anyway) to take babies away from mothers if tested positive for drugs when born.  I work as a nurse...occasionally in Pediatrics....that's how I know this.....I can't understand why you continued to do so for FOUR months after finding out that you were pregnant...I don't mean to harp on you, but I've seen the effects of drugs on infants/children too many times.....And coming from someone who miscarried twins in Dec. and did everything under the sun to be healthy for my babies, I can't understand it....Good luck and I hope that the baby is alright.

Some women smoke weed during their pregnancies and everything is fine (obviously not something I recommend). Just promise you'll stop doing it after baby is born, too. Your baby needs a mom, not a druggie!

Mom23Angels gave you very accurate information. Smoking weed is the equivalent to handing a joint to a baby and having them smoke it. Your baby was high and when you cut cold turkey, so did baby.

There's no way to know until baby is born the affects it has had on him/her. You'll have the drugs out of your system by the birth so they won't take the baby away. Please be careful and take care of yourself. Good luck.

All I can say is that my estranged sister took drugs and smoked all through both pregnancies and both her children were fine. I don't drink, don't smoke, don't take anything other than the odd paracetamol, eat healthily, took folic acid and my baby died at 8 weeks - go figure.

Awwww sorry do I sound bitter?

YES THEY DO TEST THE BABIES AS SOON AS THEY ARE TAKEN TO THE NURSERY AT THE HOSPITAL!
my sister and my sister-in-law both had to go through a series of social workers and tests to make sure there were not drugs in there systems or anywhere in their homes after the baby went home. your ob should already know if you had been smoking pot while you were pregnant because it will show up in your blood work. my mom is currently guardian of sisters six year old( she is a paraplegic)  and sisters 2 year old has cerebral palsy and un formed cerebrum, the other lil girl is perfectly healthy. my sister-in-laws children seem fine right now, but she was smoking pot and on xanex when she had her lil girl 4 months ago. the baby is constantly sticking her tongue out and cries all the time....she acts like she is going threw withdrawals.................i don't mean to scare you, but i was just giving some insight. i was around pot through my whole pregnancy (in the same room 95% of the time) my son is PERFECTLY HEALTHY......i guess it just depends.
