Acid Reflux + Epigastric Hernia

by JDRoss19, Feb 02, 2008 11:48AM
Hi there. I've had a small "air bubble" or circular bump in my upper abdomen (about an inch and a half above my belly button). I also have a history of Acid Reflux. So - i've had this thing for a few years now, however there is no pain, and when i exercise often, it is usually barely noticeable. However when i do NOT exercise for prolonged periods, the "air bubble" gets bigger, and is quite noticeable. Well - had a physical recently and my Doc says that it's a Hernia. I did some research, and it appears to be a Epigastric Hernia - i have a surgical consult next week.

Well - we all know the Surgeon is going to want to - you guessed it - perform surgery. My question is - can i prevent having surgery if i go on a strict exercise regimen? Is it necessary to have surgery, or can i take other preventative measures? Just want your opinion, since i know the surgeon will want to perform surgery, although i'd like to avoid that if possible. Thank you for any advice.

Hi JDRoss19,
Hernia irrespective of the type should be operated to prevent future complications unless there are reasons that does not allow surgery to be done.

Till you undergo surgery you may use surgical belts.
You should also avoid activities that increase the abdominal pressure like coughing , straining during defecation, lifting weight and so on.
