Shingles - nerve pain

My mother developed a case of shingles about 3 weeks ago. She is 78 and in poor health (COPD, etc). The lesions have healed completly, but she is suffering intense nerve pain. She has tried everything the doctor suggested/prescribed but nothing helps. She's currently on or tried (forgive spelling) Gabapentin, Neurontin, Talsen and a morphine derivative. The nerve pain is so intense that she tries to stay in bed all of time which is weakening her even more. Is there some medication specifically for nerve pain that may help in this case? Thanks

I have a friend with shingles and she has informed me she has experienced great relief from accupuncture. This is only anecdotal, and I have no idea whether the effect is psychological or real, but she is a credible individual.
