borderline malignancy

Hi there.. i was dx with a borderline malignancy on left ovary but there were no stromal invasion. Do i need to under go chemotherapy... sounds scary... thank you.

Most people diagnosed with borderline LMP cancers do not undergo chemo....but....follow up visits are the same as advanced staged OvCa....every three months for the first two years, after the all clear, every 6 months.....after 5 years, well that depends on if there are recurrences or not...but in some cases, after 5 years, it's a once a year visit.  While these types of malignancies have a lower rate of recurrence, they can come back and in some cases recurrences are 10 years after initial diagnosis.  The important thing is follow up, be proactive and pay attention to your body.

Hi, i was diagnosed with a borderline cancer last October and my onc decided to start me on chemo, i started in November and am now half way through it. I am on carboplatin every 3 weeks, having 6 sessions.
I had my ovary removed lasy year but because they wern't sure if any of the cancerous cysts in my ovary had burst they wanted to do chemo aswell.
If they do do chemo on you I think its more a precaution than anything else, but don't worry if they do, so far i've only really felt tired and sick but i'm still going to work and carrying on as normal so hopefully you will feel the same.

There are different types of borderline ovca.  One is LMP (low malignant potential) the other is more agressive and called MPSC or micropappilary serous cancer.  Borderline ovca is slow growing and therefore not responsive to chemo as chemo is for more agressive, and faster growing cells.  Regardless of the stage LMP ovca is not given treatment only surgical removal of the tumor, even if it recurs (which is rare).  It's important if you are diagnosed with a borderline ovca to have a second opinion done on the pathology as the pathology is tricky for borderline ovca.  It should be done at a speciality center or by a gyn pathologist.  
I was diag with LMP stage 1 in 2002 and have been cancer free ever since.  I had removal of the tumor and then opted for a hysterectomy a yr and a half later as a precaution.  I had follow-ups every 6mos for 5 yrs and yearly there after.  I also had a yearly CT scan.  
Ask your gyn-onc about your particular diag.  They can identify your next move.  But I strongly recommend a second opinion for anyone with a borderline ovca diagnosis.

Just wondering why you reccommend a second opinion for borderline ovca?
i was first diagnosed at 22 with borderline serous noninvasive implant ovarian cancer at stage IIIA! the only reason it was not caught earlier was that doctors ignored me..we believe it started when i was about 20 when the irregular periods and pain began. 18months after (now 24) i had another laboroscopy and i did have a reoccurrence but the gyno oncologist said it is extremely slow growing and noninvasive?

Because the pathology is difficult and can be mis-read (10% of the time).
Recurrance of borderline or LMP is often due to wrong interpretation of original pathology (was actually malignanat not borderline) or a second tumor that is often malignant (not actually a re-occurance of LMP, but new primary malignancy). This is why a second opinion and follow-up is important.

We came to know after Lapro Atonomy surgery (Right & left Overian Cysts or Tumors removed) in biopsy report result is saying that Borderline malignancy is there.

We are taken second opinion that result saying that Borderline Serous Epithelial neoplasm.

My wife age is 28. we have a kid. so kidnly advice us what we do next shall we go for Chemo theorphy or Suregery (To removing Overian & Utras)

Hello Sridhar, it is very nice to meet you. I am very sorry about your wife, but since she is so young and especially if you desire to have more children, she can keep her ovaries or at least one. It is very good you ahve gotten a second opinion which confirms the borderline diagnosis. This makes me less reluctant to suggest keeping the ovaies. This is a common practice for younger women. She must be very dilagent about careful follow-up (probabaly ultrasound every 6 months). Did she have n elevated CA-125? If so, then this test should also be repeated. Also, chemo therapy is not used for borderline cancer, so no need to endure this.

Please make sure to consult with a gynecologic oncologist and do not base your decision on what I have advised.

After one month  CA-125 test result is 113

CA-125 is used as an ovarian cancer marker , but basically is only correct about 50% of the time and can be positive for many benign conditions, such as endometriosis. Did your wife's doctor indicate she had endometriosis?

With this said, an elevated CA-125 since surgery makes me a little concerned that they did not possibly get all of the tumor.

Your wife should see a gynecologic oncologist for further evaluation and advice.
