J.C., why don't you want a 12 step program? I am a recovering Alcoholic myself and the 12 step program has worked for me for the past 8 1/2 years, I would recomend giving it a chance, it has worked for a couple of million of us so far. good luck ,Ed.

I've been sober for 21 years and the Excutive Director for Victor House, a 12 Step Program for men in recovery in Anahiem, CA.  We've been here since 1988, and have had over 1200 alumni.

So many lives have changed because of AA, and Victor House.  I'm a believer and I practice what I preach so to speak.  It does work, if you want it.

i have also been looking for a non-12 step program... treatment centers are hard to find... individual therapists much easier... read stanton peele's addiction website...

12 steps does not reach everyones heart... if sobriety is the goal, how you get there should never be the issue... everyone finds their own way...

women for sobriety is also a good alternative for support group...

The problem of drug addiction is seen mostly in urban regions. People in cities live a stressful life. They make drugs as a medium for getting relief from all the pain and stress. But they become drug addicted after some time of drug use and find itself in big trouble.

You need the 12 step program!!  Trying to do it without the support of other addicts is foolish indeed.  Narcotics Annonymous is an excellent program and almost all treatment centers use the 12 steps.  There are simply little or no recoveries from people doing it on their own.  Now if your a born again Christian, there are religious groups and programs that use Jesus and The Bible.  But the idea of AA, NA,  CA, etc came from the idea that people DONT HAVE to use religion alone as a step to recover.  But if you dont want religion, spirituality, or the 12 steps, than it sounds like you dont want to recover.  The very guidelines to admitting you have a problem and recovering are dealt with in great detail and perfection in these 12 step programs.  The real root of addiction is not just quitting, it's the human experience and dealing with it.  That's what the 12 steps are all about.  Anyone can quit (and probably wont stay quit), but it's a whole different story to RECOVER!  Recovering keeps you quit one day at a time for the rest of your life.
