ALS?

by abcde80, Feb 05, 2008 09:39PM
I am a 34 year old male.  About 7 months ago I was diagnosed with EBV and since have had muscle tremors.  Now I am even experiencing muscle weakness.  My legs, arms, and neck feel tired all of the time.  My fingers twitch as well as my tongue and it seems every other part of my body.  I have had two EMGs (1 of which was normal, the tech saw my fascicultations happening but nothing was occompanying them and led him to diagnose me with BFS), a normal EEG, and a normal C-Spine MRI (looking to see if I had a pinched nerve in my neck).  I have been diagnosed with Gilbert's Syndrome just recently.  I have visited the ALS clinic at UCSF, where I was diagnosed with BFS, but my symptoms of ALS (especially the weakness in my muscles) is still giving me the anxiety of ALS.  Any advice?

Permanent Atrophy shows up on the EMG...if they didn't find it there, then you can rebuild muscle tissue...axonal loss is what causes atrophy...your motor nerves literally slide off the muscles and there's no signal...no signal, no muscle contraction...no muscle contraction...no muscle...
You said you had two EMG's done...
1. Who did them?
2. How many areas did they check?
3. What did the abnormal EMG say?

Gilbert's can cause a lot of your symptoms-twitching/cramp..it usually comes and goes without permanent damage...what are the doctor's doing for your Gilberts? Be thankful that you have a diagnosis...Having unpleasant symptoms without diagnosis, in my opinion is worse, because you are always dreading ALS

Can the doctors get you into physical therapy to regain muscle loss?
I know, for me, sitting around being sick, i have gotten weaker...i measure my wrists and calves...it gives me a good indication how much i am losing...exercise intolerance is a pain (metaphorically and literally).  Incidentally, my twitching and cramps started right after two bad herpes outbreaks...i am hoping what i have is viral and will just disappear soon...i've been waiting four months now...at least i am not worse...
