Darvon/Darvocet

by Dal, Jan 13, 2000 12:00AM
Has anyone out there been addicted to Darvon? I don't think I am (I usually take one a day for migraines), but sometimes I like the way it makes me feel and this scares me. How do I know if I have a problem?

Any advice?

Be very careful with this drug. It contains propoxyphene which

is a synthetic opiate similar to cocaine except that the withdrawal period is much longer.

Here in South Africa the drug is sold as Lentogesic and I am having severe withdrawal sympotoms after having taken it for many years for migraine.

Any help in coping with the withdrawal would be appreciated by

anyone out there.

Good luck and God Bless

Derek -- I was wondering -- how long have you been taking Darvon for migraines? How many per day/week? I am curious because I want to make sure I don't get addicted to it. Also, what kind of withdrawal symptoms are you having? Sometimes it seems I am more irritable when I don't take it for a day or two. Just wondering. I hope you can kick the withdrawal! (Have you tried any other drugs for migraine?) -God bless.

Dear DAL, In answer to you queries, since 1986 and quantity up to 20 capsules in 24 hours. Do yourself a favour and search for DARVON / DARVOCET on the net and you will be able to find out a lot about it. My own opinion is that it is my own fault - nobody else's and I just have to solve the problem. It is very hard however.

Be very wary , rather go for a non-narcotic pain killer and possibly an ergotamine for migraine.

Don't fall into the same trap i did.

Kind Regards

I am a recovering drug addict.I was taking up to 12 Darvocet N-100 tablets per day.Darvocet does contain Propoxyphene which is a weak opiate, and Derek, propoxyphene is in no way similar to cocaine, and cocaine is not an opiate.Dont confuse these people any more than they already are. Also most importantly every Darvocet N-100 tablet contains 650mg of acetaminophen (Tylenol)

with 12 tabs per day, that is an almost toxic dose of tylenol,I think that you may OD from the tylenol before you die from the propox.Ignorance kills as fast as toxins in the blood when it comes to a drug like this.

I've been on Darvocet for 6 months for back pain, and I am afraid to stop taking it because of withdrawal symptoms.  What can I expect?

by Brian to Sarah, Mar 11, 2000 12:00AM
See all the postings above re withdrawal from vicodin, etc.  All narcotic withdrawal is essentially the same:  very uncomfortable but not life threatening.  Your own symptoms will depend on the amount of the drug you have been using and your own body chemistry.  Six months is fairly short so you probably won't suffer too much.  Tapering down is best, see my posts for advice on how to do so and what drugs help.  You can do it!  Good luck and post again if any more questions.

Fortunately, Darvocet is a mild narcotic although can still be addictive.  I would not take it every day for too long or you will grow dependent on it.  Symptoms of addiction are as follows: taking the drug when you don't need it; taking more than directed; feeling like you need the drug to function; finding yourself thinking about the drug; taking the drug because you like the way it feels.  The easiest way to find out if you are addicted is to stop for a few days.  If you feel sick (flu-like symptoms) then your body is dependent on the drug.  If so, taper down by taking a bit less each day until you take no more.  With your small amount (1 per day) you probably won't experience much in the way of withdrawal.  Beware however, most of us started at 1 per day and ended up at as much as 50 per day!  Good you are thinking about this now, before you have a big problem.

Is Darvon legal? Do they sell it at stores?

at school some kids have been selling darvon to other kids as drugs, to get high. some of the kids are throwing up or passing out after taking 3 at a time. I just wanted to know exactly what darvon was, because i've been on them for about a month. But i don't know where this guy is getting them from.

by Brian to Krispex, Mar 29, 2000 12:00AM
Darvon is legal in the sense that it is a medication prescribed by doctors.  It is a narcotic and it is illegal for anyone who was not prescribed the medication to take it.  Furthermore, taking 3 at a time is a lot for kids, and could possibly cause death.  If you have been taking them for a month you should stop now before you become addicted.  If you read the other posts on this page you will see how horrible everyone feels trying to get off narcotics they are addicted to.

I've been taking darvocet for 3 years threeXdaily, and I find it has been helpful for pain. I know it is addictive as it is very hard to totally stop. I have been able to get down to one darvocett a day although my mind says to take more. So the danger is apparent.  I have been able to cut way back thus keeping the tolerence level low. what is the difference between darvon and darvocet?

by Brian to Kevin, May 01, 2000 12:00AM
Darvon is propoxyphene hydrochloride.  Darvocet is the same but also contains acetaminophen.

I'm an alcoholic & drug addict. I buy Darvon in Mexico, over the counter (and also Valium, Percodan, etc).

A nice side effect of Darvon (for me, anyway) is that it's an aphrodisiac & potency enhancer. I'm 60... been on drugs for 17 years -- yeah, I know I'm gonna crash someday...

If drug tested, how long does darvocet stay in the blood system?

Concerned thanks
