Pregnancy Testing With PCSO

by Lozzarooni, Feb 07, 2008 05:00PM
Heya there

I wonder if one of you lovely people can help me out here and maybe give me an answer or two.

I'm twenty-five and was diagnosed with PCOS at the age of nineteen - though I never got told very much everything I know now was gleaned of the internet. I was immediately put on Metaformin which made me violent so my GP and I decided that I would be better to stop the treatment and try something different. I did a bit of research and asked to be put on Dianette which I've been taking since I was twenty-two having decided to wait and see if losing weight would help the condition. The pill worked great and I was having regular periods that is until January of this month.

Obviously I've been using the pill as a contraceptive and had always got my period right on time. My current partner and I haven't been trying for a baby as if we had I would have discussed this with my GP, however by the time January 17th came and went I still hadn't started the 'period' I would get during my one weeks break from the pill. I never thought anything of it until I started to feel sick through out the day and often vomited after smelling anything that was tomatoey or spicey. I did three home pregnancy tests, I had an invalid and two negatives but obviously knowing that it's harder to get caught pregnant with the condition I went along to my GP. He sent me for a Qualative HCG test which came back negative. During the weeks wait for the result to come back, I noticed that my breast were tender and that my tummy (I'm a little bit chubby) had started to harden above my belly button. Still in denial I told myself that the test could come back negative and it did. So why do I still feel like I'm pregnant?

I also started bleeding much, much lighter than I would have done if I had my period but the confusing part is that it stops and starts. I bled for a day and then stopped for two and I've been suffering with cramps and back ache. I started spotting and then bleeding lightly again two days ago. Yesterday however while I was at work (I'm on my feet most of the day)it became much heavier and the cramps much more painful. When I sit down or lay down the bleeding either eases off or stops completely until I get back on my feet again.

My mother was concerned that perhaps I was actually pregnant and having either a miscarriage or an ectopic pregnancy and took me to the hospital where I was examined and had another blood test done. That came back negative too. A few days ago I spoke to a nurse friend who told me that if you suffer with irregular periods due to PCOS that sometimes it takes more than four or five weeks for the levels of HCG to be picked up in urine or the blood.

Has anyone had any similar experiences with this.  The only thing that I can think that perhaps is happening is that I am actually pregnant but the bleeding is effecting the blood tests. Either that or when I was ovulating my body released several eggs and perhaps only one of those has been fertilized while the others are been ejected from my body. Can anybody give me some advice?

I don't acctually know why that happens...but I have gone through the same thing a few months back. I was too on the pill, and when my week break come along... still no 'period'. and I took 3 home pregnancy test. one came back invalid, one positive, and the other one was negative. since i has so many weird answers.. I made an apoint with my doctor. he did a urine sample, and a blood test. both turned out negative. but as the days went on.... i still felt like i was pregnant. like i said.... i don't know why that is... but you are not in it alone... if that puts your mind at a little more ease?!

I have just had excactly the same thing. Only i'm trying for a baby i'm not on the pill have had pcos since i was 16. With my first sucessful pregancy i was 5 MONTHS pregnant before any tests showed. the only thing that showed was a scan. Ive since had 4 misscarrys to date. However because of the lack of hormones the N.H.S refuses to see them  as confirmed pregnancies resulting in the lack of hormone in the test results. This is a N.H.S political minefeild because if they reconise the amount of misscarrys we the suffers have who's going to pay for successful pregnancys if you don't have the money yourself. So much for the N.H.S All i can say is don't give up or take no for an answer. Good luck....

I did have that happen with my first one and my second one.  The first one we did 13 pregnancy tests in all urine and blood.  They all came back negative.  They finally had to do an ultrasound when I was then 14 weeks late for my menses...guess what I was pregnant with the first one.  The second pregnancy I had a miscarrage at about 12 weeks, and then the third on 2 years later was the same no urine, no urine for about 5 weeks and then Whamo it showed up finally.  They say that some women with PCOS like us do not produce high levels of HCG right off the bat.  Keep on them and if it still feels like you are pregnant you know your body request an ultrasound.

Good Luck!

I was 9 and a half weeks pregnant when I finally had a positive test. I has a blood test come back negative. So demand and ultrasound just to rule it out. If you are on the pill you shouldn't  be taking it still if you are pregnant. Please let us know!
