Strabismus surgery

by Poorted, Feb 07, 2008 05:12PM
I am suffering from thyroid eye disease and have gone through d bilateral decompression surgery and radiation theraphy in 2007.   I am still in active phrase.  About two months ago I started to have double vision.   Shall I go for Strabismus surgery at this stage to correct my double vision or shall I go for prism correction.  What is the risk of this surgery?

You need an expert to answer your questions after examining your eyes..  Consult a board-certified ophthalmologist who specializes in strabismus (sometimes called a pediatric ophthalmologist, but they see adults).

Hi Jodie,
I have been seeing a neuro, orbit ophthalmologist who has 20 years experience in treating thyroid eye disease patients.  She recommended me to have strabismus surgery next month to correct my double vision.  I don't feel comfortable to have it done so early because I am still in an active phase, I still have a lot of pressure sensation/discomfort in my eyes and I believe my eyes are still changing.  I am thinking of doing a prism correction for a few months over surgery now.

You say that the specialist you've been seeing recommended that you have surgery next month, but you think that it's too soon for you to have surgery.  Have you discussed the timing of the surgery with your doctor?  Why does she feel you should have the surgery next month?  If you disagree with her recommendation, it's fine to consult another doctor for a second opinion.  But in your place, I would listen carefully when the doctor explains the reasons for his/her recommendations.

Hi Jodi,
Thank you for your advice.   I have done some research on the internet and I have a list of questions to ask my doctor when I see her next week.
