Long Periods

by Tammy66, Feb 08, 2008 05:05PM
My daughter ( 11yrs 2 months) had her first period in July. She was 10 1/2. We had been prepared for this because she had seen a pediatric endocrinologist(Dr. Aftab Guy) 2 years earlier for a complete workup. We were told everything was normal ( ultrasound, bloodwork, bone age) and that she would begin her period no later than 2 years after the exam.

Her cycles have been every 21 days-she actually is on her period for 9-10 days and has about 11 days off then starts agin. This month she started suddenly only 8 days after her last period had ended. She had a 6 day period. The plus side to all of this is that she has only had bad cramps 2 months in a row and not recently. Those cramps were so bad that she threw up and cried.

In January she had her regular check up with the pediatrician. She checked her CBC to be sure she was not anemic-she wasn't. She also suggested we give her Aleve 2-3 nights before she is scheduled to begin her period to help prevent cramps.

What do you suggest we do about these long periods? I have a history of endometriosis(hysterectomy at age 31_ Is this something we should be watching for?

Also, her bone age at Vanderbilt predicted her adult height to be about 5 ft 2. She is 581/2 inches now and 78 pounds.

If she indeed saw me 2 years ago I suggest that you call my office and I am happy to see her again now for a different evaluation. She could have thyroid problems, or insulin resistance or early polycystic ovarian syndrome. Even though I saw her 2 years ago she is still my patient so feel free to call!
I am on maternity leave till end of March but my NP Barbara can see her before that since she is an established patient.
Look forward to being able to help her.

Thank you for the comment. She actually has an appointment with you in late May. I will call to see if your NP can go on and see her.
Thanks,
Tammy

ok, feel free to do that Barb is great and gee whiz girl ask my opinion via the office-you actually have an endocrinologist(ok I am away for a little bit-my 5th child!) but I will be back, if Barb sees her within a month or so (she has more appts at Vandi than at Cool Springs) then I can followup.
Take care!

Tammy, saw Barb's visit with M, reviewed her labs, thyroid is normal and her bleeding time is good too-this is all good news, we are referring her to a really good adolescent obgyn at Vandi
her name is Amy Weeks and I have met her and she is very good with young teens and tweens. Barb will call you. Glad you came to see us! I still have an appt with her in May if needed after you see Amy.
