Help for older DS person

by brutus783, Feb 09, 2008 09:50PM
I am looking to find a rehabilitation facility for my nephew while my sister is being treated for aggresive chemotherapy? He is incontinent, has vision problems and has not seen a doctor in years. What kind of facility could I send him so he can get the proper care and attention he needs while my sister is ill? It looks as though I may get custodial rights and would like to know the best possible choices to make in a short period of time. Thanks.

He is probably on medicare, so speak to the department of social services, we use the Services to People with Disabilities here in my state. We have many possibilities here also for the older DS, A day care unit, nursing homes and residential facilities. Are there no group homes in your area?  I am sorry about your sister, my daughter is also doing chemo right now for ovarian cancer, but her children are all adults now.  You might also call the ARC in your area and ask for advice.

He is not on Medicare and never has been so I'm going thru the process of getting him services. I found a facility close to home so hopefully he will be receptive to outside help. Maybe after some initial attention we can get him in a day program. There doesn't seem to be a shortage of programs so will see what information the coordinator sends me. Thanks for your comments.
