Flu and then some

by Bucca302, Feb 11, 2008 02:07AM
Hello All~

Quick question, which might not be so quick - for this I do apologize...if you don't mind my posing this to you.  I have been feeling "not myself" since Thursday evening.  Was up later than usual that night - nothing totally out of the norm - up till 4 am - woke up the next morning, Fri. - exhausted, just thought it was the lack of sleep from the night before and a few other issues from the past 2 days {was told my position at work - 13 years had suddenly been eliminated}...so I just thought it was a combo of the two, alongside all of the usual stresses in life, etc.

With that being said, woke up Fri. morning thinking maybe I just needed a few more hrs sleep - when I awoke Fri. my throat and chest were beyond raw on on fire...anytime I coughed or sneezed was just like that - as though a volcano was erupting in my chest...{cough or sneeze and in the dead-center of my chest, the feeling and burn would remain for anywhere up to 15-20 mins. + afterwards} ~ more like a volcano, no other symptoms really at that time and I just thought I was getting or now had a really bad sore throat and might be getting a little run-down - after dropping off my son at school, took a few calls it was now 10 am - laid down for a lil bit - slept for a few hours during the day - didn't quite feel myself.- woke up at 3 pm...wondered where the day went and why I slept that long - just thought it was lack of sleep of late ~ then later that night, kept pressing on with what was on the schedule for that day.  Before my son and I headed out for an evening that night {he had his 1st School dance ever}, I out of the blue decided to take my temp...lo and behold,. it was 99.7...still not anything to worry about for me, still under 100...but throughout the night - while at his school dance I kept becoming hotter and hotter...I/we knew the room was pretty filled w/people, but I just felt again, not myself and just HOT!  WE stayed close to 2 hrs - left early cause of me...when we got home, took my temp again - it was already at 101.9 - +2 deg. in under 2 hrs...throughout the night it would max at what I remember {from each time I awoke would take my temp then drink about 1/2 or more bottle of water, sweating profusely, at times soaked in clothes {changes didn't make a difference}, severe chills, though beyond bundled up and 2-3 heavy blankets and clothings didn't make a difference - troed to break the fever - I know this was all due to the fever}...throughout that night, the max temp was either 103.7 or 9...sorry - can't remember, but it was that. Ever since then it's been up and down - lowest has been 99.9, then it will bounce back to 101.5+ and up to about 102.5, but haven't passed that since the other night, but still cannot break it.  I did go to my dr.'s yest. morning {I was lucky to get in there on a Sat. a.m.}, and my dr checked and told me I was pretty sick and did I get the flu shot...no - was scheduled for it but could not get out of work to do so at the available locations to me!  Per my dr/'s exam, was told I had an ear infection {lt. ear}, severe throat infection, pretty bad upper respiratory infection and the flu on top of it all - or in combination of all...it's all the same.  But to me, I think it's a little much for a total combo shot, if you will.

Yes, I do have severe allergies and usual sinus issues - matter of fact, for the past month and a half or more, have had what I thought were sinus issues, but would turn to more cold-like then a little later back to sinus-type, and back and forth, etc...I just figured it was something about to happen, then not, etc.I have never had a flu shot, and usually deal w/the chronic sinusitis, and allergy issues, etc.

But I thought that this was a tad bit much for a total combo, if you will ~ for an all-in-one-shot type of illness.

I guess my main question is just this ~ is it common for someone to present with the following symptoms as above and/or the following dx:  ear infection, severe throat infection, pretty bad upper respiratory infection and the flu - all at the same time, or could it be something else or more involved?  Yes, I am aware that the flu is hitting most areas later than usual, but my main concern is that with all of the dx I was advised of above, could it possibly be something more serious than the combo of dx I was presented with?  Or is it just the unlucky draw that I have the combo all at the same time?

The course of action/tx given to me was Levaquin 500 mg 1x TPO {daily} and Promethazine DM Syrup{w/o codeine - req. by me - don't want it unless it is necessary}, 1 tsp @ 6 hrs as needed.  I just really dislike taking meds of any type or sort, unless I absolutely have to...well,. with this mess, I know I have to...esp. for my throat and chest's sake...if not moreso my own {that burning is worse than Hell, I do think!

So, I guess I am just looking to place my mind at ease if I can, and if you are able to make any type of determination from the above data/information.  Regardless of the results of your efforts, I do thank and appreciate you and your time in reviewing this ~ your time spent it is greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

Respectfully,
Michele M. Durso
