My 14 year old

by earthquakewp1, Feb 13, 2008 06:35PM
Hello, My daughter had a 13cm cyst + 1 ovary removed via open surgery last summer and now she is having periods that are heavy and last 2-3 weeks and are causing her to be light-headed and nauseated. I am taking her to get her blood work results Friday and to a specialist on Monday, but I'm still worried. Will the specialist be able to prescribe BC pills without a pelvic? Also, if that doesn't help and she has to have her other ovary removed, will she have to take hormones?

Not sure, but will pray.  How awful to face that as a child.

Best,
Carol

Hi, my daughter lost one of her ovaries due to a dermoid cyst two years ago.  I know how you feel, it is  scary.  Hopefully it isn't anything that will require surgery again.  Yes, she would need to take hormones if she didn't have any ovaries, but don't worry about that yet.  I am praying everything will work out well for you and her!! Oh, forgot to add, I have talked with several Gyn's and they all do recommend BCP's since having her one ovary removed.  It will decrease the liklihood of cysts forming, and might "save" her other ovary in the scheme of things.  Make sure to talk to your doctors about that too!  Good luck honey. It's doubtful anyone would prescribe BC pills without a pelvic. especially given her history.  They are going to want to make sure everything is going ok.  Best wishes to you both.

Sure takes me back in time.  I had an ovary removed when I had just turned 16. I am 50 now.   All I know is that I had a large (grapefruit size) cyst, at that time they just called it "cyst" so I don't know any more than that.  My only symptom was irregular periods.  It was found by a pelvic.  The other ovary was full of cysts too.  They put me on the pill immediately after the surgery and I stayed on it until I got married and wanted kids.  I went off it and managed to get pregnant a few months later.  I had two more kids after that.   I believe the pill saved my fertility.  I had some side effects but I toughed it out.  Yes she should have a pelvic!  and lots of transvaginal ultrasounds too.  She needs close monitoring.
She must have had pelvics with the previous experience?  GOSH I do remember how traumatic they were, but my mom could have helped a lot more than she did  (different era I guess).   I wonder if a woman doctor would be better for her?
Heavy periods that last 2-3 weeks are not normal but I can't help wondering if the pill would help that.  Does she have PCOS? or Endo?    I too will pray that she will not lose her other ovary, at that age I don't think they would consider that unless it was a total last resort.  Fight for her Mama!  She needs an advocate, sounds like you are doing just that, good for you!
Please may I caution you ... don't talk about it to your friends and family....it's so embarassing at that age.
Is the specialist an endocrinologist or a gynecologist?
Please let us know how she does.... Tell her she is not alone ... We are happy to help in any way....
Love,
Katie
