laminectomy

by rich61, Feb 14, 2008 10:55AM
My dad had a laminectomy three weeks ago. He has had Parkinson's disease for 15 years. He is now experiencing what I would call dimensia. He believes he is in a virtual reality world with other people of his past. He has even propositioned women at his church for sex! The doctor says this is normal after such a surgery and it should go away. Everyone seems to be dowplaying this. Is this normal? How do I find out more information on this?

Hi.

This is a bit unusual to have after a laminectomy surgery. But such symptoms are not to be ignored. If he is having these behavior changes since the last three weeks only, this is less likely to be due to dementia alone. He may be going into delirium. This is a state of confused behavior and clouding of consciousness.

He should avoid taking any sleep medicines (especially the benzodiazepine group). These increase the problem. A Neurologist should be able to diagnose.

Regards
