This is a bit unusual to have after a laminectomy surgery. But such symptoms are not to be ignored. If he is having these behavior changes since the last three weeks only, this is less likely to be due to dementia alone. He may be going into delirium. This is a state of confused behavior and clouding of consciousness.
He should avoid taking any sleep medicines (especially the benzodiazepine group). These increase the problem. A Neurologist should be able to diagnose.
