Eye Flicker, Gray Spots

by Alesis, Feb 15, 2008 06:43PM
I occasionally have flickering and gray spot in my right eye, especially upon waking, going from a darker room to a light room or after exercise.  Sometimes I have small, almost inperceivable bursts of tiny colored flashes which only last a microsecond.  The flickering can be small or larger.  The larger ones have the grey spot, which does not occlude my vision, but it is there. Straight lines can appear wavy or not straight.  If I look a a ruler, it might look uneven especially around the spot where the flickering occurs.  My vision in the right eye is horrible for up close reading. Most words appear as mostly a gray blur and possibly a bit doubled vertically.

I had carotid surgery 6 months ago for a 97% blockage.  I was symptomatic.  I lost 2/3 vision in the right eye for about 5 minutes.  The flickering and associated symtoms were there before the surgery.
The surgery successfully restored full blood flow without complications.  I have since developed hypertension and am scheduled for an MRA to examine my renal arteries which also are suspect for a blockage.

My opthamologist could not find any structural damage and had no answer for the flickering and associated symtoms.

My question is, could this be caused by residual aterial or venous damage because of my blocked carotid or possible the occluded renal arteries if the test is positive.

What type of doctor should I see for this flickering/gray spot problem?

You should see a neuro-ophthalmologist Eye MD physician. Find one at www.aao.org

I think it unlikely that your symtoms are caused by the carotid occlusive disease.

Quite a few people complain of those symptoms on this forum and rarely do they turn out to have serious disease.
