HSV-1 vs. HSV-2

I have a similar situation.  Similar in the fact that I am confused with HSV-1 and HSV-2.  So to hopeful get your best opinion on the matter I will give you a little background first.

This past November I started dating my current boyfriend.  After about a week or two of dating I got a cold sore (my first ever).  Along with the cold sore came flu like symptoms.  I went to two different doctors, neither checked for HSV-1 or 2, but thought more along the lines of flu, mono, strep that kind of thing.  All those test were negative.  I was out of work/school for almost two weeks.

Before my current boyfriend and I got together, I was had a standard STD/HIV test.  All test there were negative and I haven't been with anyone since then besides my boyfriend.

A couple weeks ago my boyfriend got a cold sore.  Of course it was but a few days until I had one as well.  There was oral sex performed before/during (not really sure) of the cold sore.  A few days later I went to the doctor for a regular pap smear check up.  The next day my boyfriend told me he had a bump on his penis.  He had a culture done this past Monday and we still have yet to hear back.  My doctor called me Thursday to tell me that HSV was discovered in my pap smear.

She said I would have to come in to have a blood test to tell me which stain it is: HSV-1 or HSV-2.  I am hoping for HSV-1 am I relying on false hopes or could this be a possibility?  His culture results should say one or the other, however at best we won't get them until Monday.  I am looking for a little peace of mind, please help!

First check to see if you were tested for herpes with your last std testing. Chances are good that you weren't but find out anyways.

Both you and your man will need a type specific herpes igg blood test for hsv1 and hsv2.  Once you see who has what you can better figure out the likelihood of who having what where.  Depending on the pap test you had done, depends on how accurate the detection of hsv on it is.  You both already know you have hsv1 orally due to each of you having cold sores.  It could be hsv1 genitally too or it could be hsv2 - testing you both with blood tests will help figure that out.
