S. A. BRACHIAL NERVE DAMAGE?

by cara2, Feb 17, 2008 06:27AM
I recently, 1 1/2 months ago, had a severe strep aureus infection in my arm. I had vancomycin IV 2x day for 7 days. I had severe cellulitis with it. Now I am experiencing severe pain and numbness in my hand and arm. The 4th and 5th finger of my right hand are numb with pain. The pain goes up my arm. It is waking me up at night. In the wrist portion of my hand, it seems to be "caving" in somewhat. The pain in the back of my hand and wrist are the worst. What can I do about the pain? Over the counter pain meds do not even touch it. Will heat or cold help? Will it just take time to get better? Is this permanent nerve damage as a result of the infection? Do I see a orthopedist who specializes in hands or a neurosurgeon? This is having a profound affect on my life.

Hello.

You should see a Neurologist for this pain. He will be able to guide you better. This is a result of the infection you had, and you probably are experiencing a neuropathic pain.

An EMG will tell you which nerves are affected.

All the best.

Thank you so much for the advice and thank you for participating in this forum.

I have a wonderful neurosurgeon who I have used in the past and who I have worked with.
