eczema on eyes?

i have severe food allergies and a few weeks ago, after a food scare, i started taking benadryl for a week.  i noticed that i was getting patches of red, itchy skin on my eye lids and at the corners of my eyes.  i initially thought it was dry skin because of the benadryl, but ive noticed that it looks more like eczema than dry skin.

i don't want to put topical steroids on my eyelids because they're so thin i don't want them getting into my eyes.  does anyone have any suggestions?

I have what you are describing and have for the past 7-8 years. It's called seborrheic dermatitis, an oil gland disorder. The only thing that helps me out is a prescriptions of eye ointment that is safe for the eyes. It's neo/poly/dexamethasone. It's a steroid/antibiotic ointment. I have to use it daily to keep it under control. Do you have any other spots that are scaly or scabbed over? A few years ago, I developed some on the back of my scalp. Now it's on my hairline next to my temples, very embarassing. I use topical cortaid otc on it and it helped some. But recently read that ultraviolet a and b rays helps with this. That's probably true, because I am not a sun worshipper, but I did tan at the beginning of summer in a tanning bed. I haven't been there for about 7-8 years! Funny, huh?  It took me this long to figure that out. I'm at day two in the tanning bed. We'll see what happens.  Best of luck to you. tmv

Oh, I almost forgot. Don't use otc cortaid or any other hydrocortisone cream around your eyes. It can blind you.

yes, now that you mention it, i get scaly patches at random places like my upper arms and the nape f my neck.  thanks for you help!

Awesome! My son is having this very system. The rash around one eye. Eczema runs ramped in my fam, so I just thought it was that but since searching and finding this link, I also see that it is prob in fact Seborrheic Dermatitis. We'll be at his doctor tomorrow. ALSO thx for the tip about the ointment's. That's normally what I use and I most certainly did not want to put it on his eye.

I had many of the symptoms described here: Bad flaking of the scalp, along the hairline on  my neck and forehead, behind the ears, and around my eyes. It was embarrassing to go out in public the flaking was so bad. My doctor diagnosed the condition as eczema and prescribed a 10-day program of prednisone, starting with 60 Mb/day reducing to 20 Mg/day plus cortisone-valerate 2 percent creme.

By the end of the prednisone routine last week my problem had cleared up and I was home free -- I thought. Then yesterday the problem around the eyes came back, so I've resumed the prednisone and cortisone, but I'll go back and see the doctor. Eyes aren't something to be messed with, I learned. I got some of the cortisone in one eye and it was severely bloodshot for a week (though painless).

Hi,

It appears that you have Sebohrreic dermatitis. The treatment requires use of certain medication and appplications. This may involve steroids only in intense cases and not for all cases.

I think you should go back to your doctor and tell him about the recurrence of this condition so soon after treatment.
