Hi,

I hope you will be okay.  Are you concerned you may have cancer?

I had a colostomy due to a perforated colon from diverticulitis.  What kind of questions do you have?  I will tell you it is very difficult to deal with emotionally.  I recommend having a support person over the phone to talk with who has been through it, if you have to have this done.  The person I talked to told me it gets better over time.

Let me know what questions and I will try and answer the best I can.

Take care,

LM

Hi everyone... I've had a colostomy for over 4 years. When I was told that I would need a colostomy, it wasn't the news that I wanted to hear, but like most things in life, one has to accept the inevitable and make the best of a situation, which I did. I lead a very active and full life.. travel, swim and eat anything I like (some with consequences :-).... but all in all, I don't think about it. It's good to see a site for people with colostomies, as I would like to think that maybe I can offer some support to those new to it.
Best wishes....Helen...

Hi Marlene.....I'm not sure what sort of bags you have, but mine don't come off while in the water. I live in Australia, so maybe it's a different type of bag to what you have. We are all pretty much swimmers here..:-)... so I guess they've had to make one that would work in the water. Acceptance of the bag.... well, we don't have much choice, and I think unless one accepts what's happening, then it will just make for a big problem. Anyhow I'd rather wear a bag than be dead, and that was the alternative I was given. No choice really, so just had to get on with it. I don't find it any big deal really... it's part of me now, and my life hasn't changed much at all. I hope you are doing fine, and all is well....hugs...Helen...
