vaginal bleeding and more

my girlfriend, who is 25...has been on the depo shot for about 10 months.   Sometimes she bleeds...its fairly rare, unless she is hiding it and I dont know.   But once recently she bled so much it ruined her clothes.   She has also made vague remarks about abdominal pain.      I've seen the blood before and it looks very dark red, probably even dark brown or even blackish.    Does this sound concerning.

Hello,

Irregular bleeding like you describe is a common side effect of Depo Provera.  Your girlfriend should have been counseled about this possibility when initiated on the medication.  If she has any questions/concerns she should see the provider who is prescribing the medication.

Best regards,

Dr. Downing

I was on the Depo Provera for about 4years, and just recently i had a period that lasted for about 1 month off and on. The Dr. has taken me off the Depo Shots and I was put on Birth Control Pills. The blood was very dark red and  blood clots. I was given an altrsound was told nothing was wrong. Is this normal with the Depo Provera? Any advise
